Hebzuchtige Hendrik is an interactive film installation in which film, 3D objects, and theatre come together in a unique and immersive experience. The audience is fully transported into 19th century Twente, where a life sized weaving loom actually begins weaving at specific moments, and a physical door offers access to a mysterious merchant. This combination of visual effects, physical elements, and compelling storytelling makes the experience accessible and engaging for a wide audience, from young to old.
In this story, we follow Hendrik and Griet, who grow flax during the summer and weave textiles throughout the winter. Before the performance begins, the audience receives a short educational introduction to the traditional process of flax production, after which tensions gradually begin to rise. As the textile industry expands, Hendrik and Griet find themselves with less work during the winter months, until a mysterious merchant appears with a tempting offer. What starts as a fairy tale slowly unfolds into an immersive saga filled with intrigue, tradition, and moral dilemmas.
In a subtle way, the story creates a direct connection between the past and contemporary issues such as overproduction and the impact of the fast fashion industry. Through the interactive elements, the audience itself becomes complicit in these problems. This makes Hebzuchtige Hendrik a unique experience that is both visually striking and intellectually engaging.
